Modern dance, also called lyrical, is a popular form of dance that embraces free flowing movements and artistic interpretation. The shoes, costumes and music that accompany modern dancing are a vital part of the dance form.
SHOES
When you’re first starting in modern dance, you can use the ballet and jazz shoes you already own. They will provide the flexibility you need for modern dance moves. However, they don’t have the natural look that best fits modern dance, so as you become more immersed in modern dance, you will want to move on to more specialized shoes.
Dancing barefoot is also an option in modern dance. It can work well within the modern dance style, but it can also cause problems with turns as your feet stick to the floor more than the soles of dance shoes do. You also want to make sure you have a safe surface before dancing barefoot, as splinters can be especially painful when they’re contracted in the middle of a powerful dance move.
Lyric sandals are the perfect mix of the look and control of dancing barefoot with the turning assistance and foot protection a sole can provide. They consist of a leather pad that fits under the ball of your foot, a thong between the toes and elastic at the top and back.
The modern jazz sandal goes a step farther than the lyric sandal, providing a sole for the entire underside of the foot. The sole is held on to the foot through criss-crossing laces, providing a distinctive look.
There are other options that are unique to individual shoe manufacturers. Visiting your local dance supply store will give you the clearest idea of all of your choices. Balance the control and foot protection you need with the look you most want and you’ll find the perfect modern dance shoe for you.
COSTUMES
Dresses and skirts over leotards are typical modern dance wear. A dress will create a more uniform line and better movement than a skirt, but a skirt can also be more versatile if you’re planning the costuming for a recital or other larger performance. Gauzy pants over a leotard are another option that provides versatility while maintaining a soft style.
Scarves and/or head wraps make good accessories to round out a modern dance costume and with careful choreography can double as a prop to accent the dance moves.
Even more so than with other dance forms, when selecting a modern dance costume you want to think about what would best fit the music and dance moves to create a cohesive artistic whole.
MUSIC
It’s important to consider the flow and softness of modern dance when picking music. The new age genre is one option. Easy listening/adult contemporary music also offers potential. Most importantly, when choreographing a modern dance, look for music that speaks to you and inspires you. While all forms of dance can be staged as interpretations of the music, in modern dance it’s even more important. What do you want to leave the audience feeling after they have seen your dance?
