Reducing and preventing puffy, swollen eyes

How to prevent and treat swollen puffy eyes with natural home remedies.

There are many natural remedies to help rejuvenate your eyes at home that are inexpensive and easy to do. Prevention is also key. Start taking care of your eyes and skin before problems start, it will cut down on the problems that arise in the future.

Here are tips to help prevent and eliminate puffy, swollen eyes.

1) Drink plenty of water. This bit of advice is found on tons of health and beauty tip lists and for good reason! Your body needs water! When your body is lacking in water it will hold on to whatever it can wherever it can - this includes in your eyelids making them puffy and droopy! You also shouldn't drink anything - including water for 2 hours before bed. Drink plenty of water throughout the day - at least 64 ounces - but then cut yourself off so that excess water can be eliminated from the body and not stored.

2) Watch your intake of caffeine and sodium. Both of these products make your body retain water, and again the eyelids are one of those areas that will retain water making them puffy.

3) Do not rub your eyes! Rubbing the eyes tears delicate tissue around the eye area. This will lead to more swelling and irritation.

4) You need plenty of peaceful, restful sleep. Remove as much stress from your life as possible, this is good not only for your eyes, but also for every part of your well being.

5) When you make up in the morning, splash cold water all over your face. This helps constrict blood vessels and reduces facial swelling.

6) Do NOT apply hemorrhoid cream. Some people will tell you to apply this cream to help reduce swelling. It is not made to be put around the eye area, and may cause severe irritation that may hurt your eyes worse.

7) If you suffer from allergies, take medication for it and use eye drops designed for allergies. Allergies cause eyes to swell, and makes them itchy increasing the likelihood of rubbing them.

8) Sleep on your back with your head elevated, this helps reduce water retention in the eye area.

9) There are many natural home products you can use as a compress that will help remove swelling:

a) The standby of cucumber slices has been around for years, and it's still around because it works! Just slice 2 pieces of cucumber and lay back with them on your eyes for 15 - 20 minutes.

b) You can also use potato slices, but make sure all of the dirt has been removed, and you should probably peel them and wash them before slicing just to make sure you wont have any dirt falling into your eyes and irritating them worse. You may also want to stick them into the refrigerator for a few minutes first so they are nice and cold.

c) Two spoons set in the refrigerator for a few minutes can also be used to reduce swelling when placed over the eyelids. Because of the hardness of the metal, some people find this method uncomfortable.

d) Don't throw out your used tea bags; throw them in the refrigerator instead to save for when your eyes need a quick pick up. Chamomile tea bags work extremely well and won't burn your eyes. You should avoid saving any type of mint tea bags, as these may be burning or stingy to the eyes, causing more irritation.

e) Make an eye mask with 2 egg whites, stiffly beaten. Add 2 drops of witch hazel and beat a little longer. Pat the beaten eggs to the area under your eyes and let sit for 15 minutes. Gently pat off with a cold wet wash cloth.

f) Dab some vitamin E oil on your lid and below the eye. The vitamin E helps reduce swelling.

Some part of eye puffiness is hereditary and you might not be able to totally eliminate your problem. There are products on the market that may help you, but you'll have to experiment with trial and error to find out what works best for you and your skin type.
