How to tie a head scarf

A few suggestions for folding square head scarves, tips on tying them, and suggestions on ways to wear them fashionably.

Hair scarves can be stylish yet practical. On a windy day, a hair scarf can keep your hair from blowing and on a day when you simply don’t feel like styling your hair, a hair scarf can hide the fact. Hair scarves can be tied a couple of different ways, depending upon how you want to wear it. Many women fold the scarf in half to form a triangle, then place the wide part of the scarf on the top of the head, tying the ends together under the chin. The point of the triangles hangs down the back. Some women don’t like the feel of the scarf tied under their chin, so they tie it in the same manner, but tie the knot behind the neck, under the hair. Tying it in the back of the neck, you can tie once, pull the points of the triangle down into the knot, and tie again. This prevents the points of the triangle from sticking straight out in the back or from flipping upwards in the wind.

Another way to tie a scarf is to fold in half, make a triangle, then beginning from the large end, roll towards the small end until the scarf is tubular. Place the middle of the scarf in the middle of the forehead, then tie the ends at the back of the head. A similar method of tying is to take hold of one corner of the scarf, and with the other hand, use the index finger to twirl the scarf round and round to form a twisted scarf. Now tie around the forehead and secure in back.

Using a wispy scarf, pull hair up into a pony tail, fold the scarf in half diagonally, then wrap the scarf around the pony tail and tie once. Allow the ends to hang free. The same thing can be done with pigtails, too. Or, put the ponytail at the back of the neck and then tie the scarf.

For a bun style, fold the scarf into a triangle, then twist the scarf into a long rope. Place one end of the scarf at the back of the bun and wrap the scarf around the bun until you get to the end. Take the last end and bobby pin it into place or tuck it into the wrap. This can be done whether the bun is on top of the head or in the back of the head. You can also tie the scarf around the bun once, then let the ends hang free.

When wearing rollers, some women like to tie the scarf at the top. Fold the scarf in half, diagonally, then place the middle of the large end of the scarf at the middle of the back of the neck. Bring the ends of the scarf up to the front top of the head, then tie once. Pull the end of the triangle down into the knot then tie once again.

Braid hair down the back into one braid. Stop about halfway down the braid and tie the scarf around the end of the plat. Let the ends hang free.

Scarves that are particularly huge can be folded to form a triangle, then folded again on the diagonal to make them easier to work with. Scarves are fun, colorful and practical to wear and there are many different ways to wear them, so they never get old or dull.
