Most people have certainly experienced self-help programs promoting ways to be more successful. These types of programs are designed to give you more confidence and get you closer to achieving your goals. One of these methods is called visualization.

Visualization may, on the surface, seem like a silly idea. Especially in our fast-paced, need-it-yesterday world, taking time to think and contemplate is the last thing most people want to do. However, visualization can be a very useful method to help you achieve your goals.

Building Mastery

The idea behind visualization is that your visualize yourself going though a process or task before you actually do it. For instance, some doctors will actually visualize an entire operation in their mind before performing the actual operation. Going through the process in your mind helps to build mastery of a task and helps make the result a success.

This can work because you are essentially doing the task more than once. Going through a process over and over helps to build mastery. We become better at something when we must do it several times. Envisioning a surgery, going through it, and imagining it being a success can lead to that happening when presented with the real-life situation.

It does not have to be a major medical surgery for visualization to breed mastery. Rehearsing an important speech that you have to give in front an important client helps you to refine what you are going to say. It also allows you to determine if what you are saying and how you are saying it, will come off well with your intended audience.

Planning for Problems

Visualizing a task that you want to accomplish also allows you to plan for potential problems that may occur on your way to success. If you have a goal of repairing an old hot rod, there are certainly many things that can get in the way. From problems with the engine to having the wrong parts, being prepared for the unexpected can certainly help you overcome them without quitting.

When you visualize yourself fixing that hot rod, you can visualize the problems that may arise. Then, you can visualize what you might do if these problems arise when you are actually working on the car. This will allow you to be able to have plans in mind to take care of these potential problems, which can mean that there will be less of a chance of these problems halting your ultimate goal of fixing the car.

If we go back to the example of the important speech, visualizing what could go wrong during your speech will help you to avoid those problems in the first place. If you visualize members of the audience start falling asleep, then you can think about what you would do to get their attention back.

Building Confidence

The big reason that visualization works is that it builds confidence. Visualizing the process of achieving and succeeding at something makes you more confident when you get to the actual task at hand. People are certainly more comfortable when they know what to expect. Visualization helps people to make almost any task more comfortable - which can increase the success rate.

This is exactly why some doctors visualize an entire operation before they perform the actual procedure. This builds confidence in the doctor's ability to perform the operation without error. It also builds confidence that they have thought about the problems that may arise.

In the end, visualization is not simply a way to waste time and daydream. Instead, done properly, visualization can be a great way to build confidence and help you to achieve your goals.
