Large women want the same things that thin women want: to feel comfortable, look sexy and have clothes that fit. It’s become a little easier to find clothing for large women, since more manufacturers have added the larger sizes to their clothing lines, but even still, the task of finding something that fits perfectly, looks fabulous and is very comfortable too, is nearly impossible. Since no two women are built the same, no clothing line will fit every woman.

Plus sizes aren’t just for large women. They are for women who are small, yet large in the bust, or women who are just extremely tall. It stands to reason that a size 2X nightgown will not fit a 5'2" woman who weighs 225 pounds the same way it will fit a 5'11" woman who weighs 160. And whether she wears a medium or a 3X, finding a perfect fit isn’t all about how much the woman weighs. It’s also about how tall she is and how proportionate certain body parts are to others.

When purchasing complete one-piece outfits, often one part of the garment will fit fine, but then another part of the garment is way too small. Or, it all fits fine, but it’s entirely too long. For hard-to-fit women, the best way to purchase lingerie is in separate pieces. This way, you can choose night shorts, pajama bottoms or panties in one size, then select a separate shirt or camisole in another size. That works out well if there’s a selection of matching or coordinating separates, but if not, it’s difficult to find pieces that will coordinate well, unless you stick with basic colors, like red, white and black.

Looking for clothing that is adjustable helps to find a better fit. Brassieres and some lingerie that is made with a bra-like top are good choices, since usually they are adjustable not only around the bust, but in the straps as well. Nightgowns with adjustable straps are an appropriate selection for women who are short, since the straps can be raised to bring the length up an inch or two. Spaghetti straps that tie are good, since they too, can be adjusted. For women who simply find it impossible to locate a floor-length nightgown that doesn’t drag the floor, short nighties can give you comfort and they look good on various heights. Or, choose a camisole that is somewhat long, then add a separate panty, pajama bottom or sleeping shorts.

Pajamas bottoms and shorts that have a draw string at the waist work well for those who need the extra room in the hips, but don’t need it in the waist. Pajama bottoms that have elastic around the ankle help for short women, since the elastic prevents the ankle of the garment from falling to the floor.

For those who only need a little extra room in the bust area or the hips, look for garments that are made from stretch fabrics to allow the extra inches in one particular area of the body. Stretch fabrics are also good when purchasing teddies. Short women who are a little heavy can find a good fit with a stretch teddy, and so can a woman who is tall. Remember, if you are large, stretch fabrics and separates are your friends.
