When it comes to owning a home, there are a lot of details that must be addressed. The yard and its maintenance, the furniture that you put in the home and the colors you decide to paint the wall are only a few examples.

One detail that is drawing more and more attention in the area of decorating a home is lighting. It used to be that most rooms had similar basic lighting options. But as consumers continue to look for new ways to be creative when decorating their homes, new and inventive ways to implement light continue to grow.

Anthony Donovan is president of Lighting Tech and Design. He opened the company five years ago and has had 12 total years in the business of lights and fixtures. Donovan said that using the right lighting in the right situation can be crucial to the room.

"Lighting controls are important," he said. "Some people like bright spaces while some people like to get away from light. There are also safety issues and how well you can see in the dark. There are a lot of factors involved."

One of the most important details that a consumer should look at when deciding on different lighting options for their home is how their habits and use will affect lighting. And if you are the type of person that plans on spending a lot of time outside working in a garden or relaxing on a deck, checking out all your outdoor options would probably be a good idea.

Another important factor is to know your lighting situation and what works best on a room by room basis. Let's say that you want one of your rooms to be an office. In this case, it would probably be in the best interest of the decorator to make this room very well lit. Maybe even add some different type of adding to aid in the hours of work that will be done in the office. Donovan said that it's fine to chat with your architect about exactly what you want.

"Talk to your architect to visualize your space and decide what you like," he said. "Try to make it as versatile as possible so you can set the moods in your house and in individual rooms."

Once you've decided where you want to add the lighting for your home, Donovan suggests that you next understand all the different types of lighting options that you have.

"Some forms include incandescent lamps, fluorescent, HIB and sunlight," he said.

"Fluorescent lights are the most energy-efficient artificial light source," he added. "Halogen is an incandescent bulb with special gases. It's a bit more efficient than regular incandescent."

"A black light is usually a fluorescent light," Donovan continued. "It only shows certain colors like blues rather than the full spectrum that regular light bulbs have. Fiber optic lighting is a kind of shower lighting that sends light through a tube."

"Solar lights use solar panels to collect energy during the day and store that energy in batteries," he said. "At night the lights use the energy that was stored up in the batteries during the day."
