Overview
Lipozene is a weight-loss supplement that is intended to help an individual maximize the amount of weight lost per week through diet and exercise. The only active ingredient in Lipozene is glucomannan, a form of dietary fiber, which is an essential part of a balanced diet. Like all fiber-based products, Lipozene can produce uncomfortable or undesirable side effects, typically in regards to the digestive process.
Function
Dietary fiber comes from the portion of plant-based foods that the human digestive system cannot break down. It is an essential part of balanced and healthy diets because it helps the body in processing water, as well as moving waste through the digestive system. Dietary fiber also assists in the cleansing and reduction of plaque buildup that can occur in the intestines over time. It is introduced into the body by ingesting foods that are rich in dietary fiber, such as unprocessed whole grains, fruits and vegetables. However, these benefits are infrequently experienced, as most modern diets do not naturally contain enough dietary fiber, due to the high amount of processed and refined foods available in the market.
Mild Side Effects
When an individual suddenly introduces any form of dietary fiber, such as Lipozene, into his diet, some uncomfortable gastrointestinal side effects are likely to occur. Nausea, an intense fullness and stomach cramping are possible, especially 1 to 2 hours after taking the Lipozene dosage. Individuals may also experience bloating of the stomach and lower abdomen for several days after starting Lipozene, as well as frequent or excessive gas and diarrhea.
Treating Mild Side Effects
These side effects are not life-threatening or truly dangerous, and can be avoided if the individual gradually increases her Lipozene dosage over the course of a few weeks to allow her body to get used to it. For example, while the Lipozene instructions suggest taking two capsules before each meal, thus totaling six capsules a day, it may be a better idea to take only one capsule before each meal for a week before adding in the second capsule. Another way to decrease potential side effects to is drink at least 48 oz. of water per day, as the movement of dietary fiber through the intestines relies on proper water absorption.
Severe Side Effects
While they are rare, several serious side effects have been noted in some individuals who were taking Lipozene, including difficulty swallowing, poorly regulated glucose levels, and severe diarrhea lasting for several days or more. These side effects usually indicate an allergy to glucomannan, and will stop after an individual ceases taking the supplement. However, users of the supplement are strongly urged to seek immediate medical treatment if any of these reactions should occur.
Long-Term Side Effects
One long-term side effect that may result from the ingestion of Lipozene before meals is the loss of essential nutrients absorbed into the body. Early research on the effects of glucomannan indicates that it can prevent the digestive tract from properly processing vitamins and minerals (such as Vitamin E) that are ingested through other foods. This side effect can be avoided if individuals who are taking Lipozene make sure to take a reputable multivitamin as well, such as Centrum or One-A-Day.
