How to Make Address Labels for Free

By G.K. Bayne

  • Overview

There are several different ways of creating address labels for little or no cost. If you have a word processing program on your computer, chances are you already have the templates needed to make labels without additional software. If you don't have the templates, there is free software available that can be downloaded for use.
    • Step 1

Check to see if your word processing program includes templates for creating address labels. Most major word processors have this capability. The simplest way to do this is to click "New" on the "File" menu and see if template options are available.
    • Step 2

Open your word processing program if using Microsoft Word. Under the "File" menu, click "New." You will be presented with several types of documents to create. Click on "Letters" and look for a "Mailing Label Wizard." Follow the instructions to create either single address labels or labels for a mailing list. Other major word processors, such as Lotus WordPro and Open Office, will have similar commands for doing this.

    • Step 3

Download and install the Avery Label Making Program if your word processor does not have templates for labels. This is a free download from Avery and will work with any type of label paper you purchase. Choose the label size that matches your paper. Follow the onscreen instructions to create your labels.
    • Step 4

Check the website of the word processing software. For example, Microsoft has label templates available for download if you need a specific size that isn't already included in the software.
    • Step 5

Load your label paper in your printer. Once you have your labels created, click on the "Print" icon in your word processor or the Avery software to print the labels you need.
