How to Make a Birthday Card on the Computer

By Erica Sweeney

  • Overview

Birthday cards can be pretty expensive and do not always show your personal side. Create your own birthday cards for friends and loved ones on the computer. Microsoft Publisher 2007 offers the most options for creating birthday cards on the computer, but you can also download templates from Microsoft Office Online to create birthday cards in Word. Making your own birthday cards on the computer allows you to personalize the card for a specific individual and design it exactly how you want.
  • Create a Birthday Card in Publisher

    • Step 1

Purchase card stock, colorful paper or textured paper at an office supply store. Simple white copy paper will do. There are so many possibilities when it comes to buying paper for printing a birthday card. Pick one that matches your individual needs.
  • Step 2

Open Microsoft Publisher 2007 on your computer. If you do not have it, you can find the link in our Resources section.
  • Step 3

Click "Greeting Cards" in the "Getting Started with Microsoft Office Publisher 2007" box. Most likely, this box will appear when you open the program. If not, go to "File" and select "New." The box will appear.
  • Step 4

Scroll down to the birthday section to find a template. Templates are easily modified. If you find a template in another section that you like, you can easily make it into a birthday card. When you find a template that you like, double click on it.
  • Step 5

Use the "Format Publication" box on the left side of the screen to customize the card. The tools in this box allow you to change the color, font and other items. If this box does not appear, click on "Format" at the top. Choose from the tools listed on that menu.
  • Step 6

Change the color of the card by clicking on "Color Schemes." Go through the various color schemes to find one that looks best with the template. To see what the card will look like in a certain color, click on it. The card will change.
  • Step 7

Change the font of the card by clicking on "Font Schemes." As with "Color Schemes," click on different font styles to find what you like best.

  • Step 8

Enter text onto the card. Text may come up with the template, but you can change it to say anything that you like. Simply click on the template's text, and it will become highlighted. Start typing your own personalized message. Be sure to enter text on the cover, inside and back of the card. Click on the page numbers near the bottom of the screen to access the inside of the card.
  • Step 9

Add or change pictures and graphics in the card. If the template has pictures already in it, simply click on the picture to select it. Go to "Insert Picture." Choose "Clip Art." In the search box, enter the type of image that you're looking for. When you find a picture, click on it, and it will automatically replace the one in the template.
  • Step 10

Insert a photograph into the card by going to "Insert Picture." Choose "File." Locate the photo on your computer, and it will be inserted into the card.
  • Step 11

Print your card once you have it customized for a specific birthday. Once it is printed, fold the page to make the card.
  • Download Birthday Card Templates

    • Step 1

Go to the Microsoft office Website (see Resources).
    • Step 2

Click on the "Templates" tab at the top.
    • Step 3

Scroll down and click on "Greeting Cards" in the "Browse Templates" box.
    • Step 4

Click on "Occasions and Events." Browse through the templates to find a birthday-card template that works for you. Click on the template that you want to download, and it will take you to an informational page with information about the card, such as the program that it should be used with and the file size. Look for cards that are available in Microsoft Word.
    • Step 5

Click "Download" when you find the birthday card template that you want. In the "Save As" box, choose where you want to save the template. Click "Save." The card will automatically open in Word.
    • Step 6

Enter your own personal message onto the template. Double click on the text, and a text box will appear around the text. You will be able to modify the text. Unfortunately, there is not as much flexibility when using birthday-card templates in Word, as there is when using Publisher. Some of the templates will allow you to change the graphics, and others will not.
    • Step 7

Print the card on colored or textured paper.
    • Step 8

Fold the card in half so that there is an image on either side of the fold. Then, fold in half again so that one image is on the outside, and the message should then be on the inside of the card.
