How to Make a Birthday Party Card in Microsoft Word

By Heidi Braley

  • Overview

If you have Microsoft Word, you can design professional looking birthday cards right from your own desktop. There are a multitude of options available, limited only by your imagination. You can use family photos or clever clipart and even poetry to personallize a beautiful birthday party card. Play with different kinds and colors of paper.

    • Step 1

Open a blank document in Microsoft Word. Click File and then Page Setup and then Margins. Insert .5 in each of the 4 options at the top. Choose Landscape for the orientation. Now click on the top tab that says Paper. Choose the JIS B5 option so that you have a basic 10 by 7 layout. This will give you a standard 5 by 7 card, when folded in half. Hit OK.
    • Step 2

Insert a picture from the Insert menu on the top of the page. Choose a photo or piece of clip art from your files and then right click on it to Format Picture. Make sure the size is 4 by 6, and the layout is In Front of Text. Center the picture in the left half of the paper, both from top to bottom and side to side.

    • Step 3

Add text to your card front. Click on the top tab Insert and choose Textbox. Type in the text and select font, size and color. Be sure to choose a color that shows up well against the background you've chosen. Click the top tab Format, and choose Textbox tools, Bring to Front option. Position the textbox to complement the picture.
    • Step 4

Insert a text box on the right side and center it. Add any text that you like, remembering that this is the back of the card.
    • Step 5

Start a new page and set it up as the card's inside page. Insert a textbox and type in the friendly words you would like to say on your birthday card. (There are many online sources for nice verses if you have a hard time coming up with phrases.) Center it on the left side of the page from top to bottom and from side to side.
    • Step 6

Cut some cardstock to a 10 by 7 inch size. Set your print dialog to print on a 10 by 7 inch paper. Print the second page first and then turn it over and print the first page on the back. Make sure you have the print side down in your printer paper feed tray and turn the paper over from side to side when you print the second side. If you are unsure, practice on a plain piece of paper first.
