How to Make Cheap Plastic Blinds Look Expensive

By Contributing Writer

  • Overview

Plastic blinds are a true bane of apartment dwelling or homeownership. They're flimsy, can break easily and--depending on their color--can look cheap. If you're stuck with them in your house or apartment, check out these 4 ways to make even the cheapest of window treatments look luxurious.
    • Step 1

Surround your window blinds with tall, billowing velvet drapes and a handsome-looking window treatment rod. This will bring the focus away from the blinds; plus, you can draw the drapes to conceal them.
    • Step 2

Choose wallpaper or contact paper in a color or pattern you like that complements your decor. Measure the individual blind slats. Then, using an utility (X-Acto) knife, cut out the appropriately-sized pieces for the slats. Follow instructions for adhering the pieces to the blinds. Make sure you've made small cuts for the blinds' strings to pass through.

    • Step 3

Camouflage your cheap blinds with gorgeous balloon shades. Balloon shades hang from a rod about three-fourths down the window in front of your blinds, and most have the ability to raise up or down using buttons or ties. They won't raise up completely, making them an excellent choice for covering up inexpensive blinds.
    • Step 4

Paint them. Make sure you buy paint that works on plastic or vinyl and follow instructions for the best application. Don't choose a shiny gold, silver or black, which heralds of cheap hotels. Instead, opt for a matte finish in a neutral color.
