How to Make a Conference Call With Skype

By Amanda Kondolojy

  • Overview

Skype is a free Internet Voice-Over-IP (VoIP) service that allows you to call friends and family around the world for free. It features a very simple IM-style interface, and unlimited free usage (to other PC-based Skype users). Although Skype is great for simply calling one person at a time, it is also very useful for conference calls with multiple participants.

    • Step 1

Get the Skype program. Simply download the installer from the official website (follow the link in Resources), then run it by clicking twice on its icon. Follow the prompts to install the program, then click on it twice to open it.
    • Step 2

Sign up for a Skype ID. When you launch Skype for the first time, it will ask if you have a SkypeID. If you do not, sign up for one by following the provided link. A SkypeID is your username on Skype, and allows you to make calls as well as receive them.

    • Step 3

Add people to your contact list. Once you have a Skype ID, you can go to the "Contacts" section of the Skype program and click on the "Add" button. This will allow you to add co-workers and friends' Skype IDs to your contact list. Once you have added them to your list, they will have to approve you before you can make calls.
    • Step 4

Make a call. Simply click on a contact's name, then click the green "Call" icon to initiate the phone call. You will hear a dial tone, which will stop once you are connected.
    • Step 5

Add other people to the call. Once you have established a connection with another person, simply go to your contact list and click on the name of the next person you want to add. There will be a menu icon. Click on the menu and scroll down until you see the "Invite to Conference" option. Click on it, and the new party will receive notification that you are trying to add him. Once he accepts, he will be automatically added to the "Active Call" list.
    • Skill: Moderately Easy
    • Ingredients:
    • Headset, or speaker and microphone
    • Tip: Although you can add as many people as you want to a conference call, the quality of the call goes down severely if you have more than five participants.
    • Warning:
    • If you do have more than five participants, expect long lag times, as well as unexpected call drops.
