How to Make Furnace Air Filters

By Phyllis Benson

  • Overview

Air filters are used in heating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. A filter keeps the ducts clean, filters out dust from the furnace and motors, traps particles that blow through the house and improves air quality. When an air filter is clogged with dust and dirt, it must be cleaned or replaced. Sometimes a replacement filter is not available. It may be out of stock or the existing filter is not a standard size. You can replace the furnace filter by making a new filter. Follow these easy tips to make a furnace filter in minutes.

    • Step 1

Measure the old filter. The size is usually printed on the filter frame. Write down the length and width and thickness. A typical furnace or HVAC filter is about 1-inch thick. Call the local hardware or home improvement store and ask if they have a cut-to-fit filter pad. The price is usually between $5 and $20 for the new pad.
    • Step 2

Take your measurements to the store. The cut-to-fit filter pad must be larger than the size you need. The pad is usually a woven pad about 30-inches-by-30-inches-by-1-inch thick. The pad is woven from natural materials like hog hair or synthetic materials. Either kind is acceptable. Choose a permanent or washable pad that can be removed, cleaned and replaced.

    • Step 3

Remove the pad from the package. If the pad has a net on one side, this is the side that goes toward the furnace or in the direction of airflow. You may want to write "inside" on the net side so that later you know which side goes in. Use the old filter for a pattern or use a yardstick and felt pen to draw the outline on the new pad. Cut the pad outline with scissors. The pad is frameless. It does not need a filter frame.
    • Step 4

Turn off the furnace or HVAC system. Dust or clean the area where the pad fits. Use a brush or vacuum cleaner to clean the grill that fits over the pad. Install the new pad. Write the date on a calendar or maintenance sticker. Keep the pad bag and instructions in a safe place
    • Step 5

Check the new pad once a month. When it is dirty, turn off the furnace or HVAC system, remove it and hose it off outside or clean according to the manufacturer instructions. Dry the pad and replace it in the unit. If a new disposable air filter is found in the right size, clean and store the permanent cut-to-fit filter for future use.
    • Skill: Easy
    • Ingredients:
    • Existing furnace filter for pattern
    • New cut-to-fit filter pad
    • Yardstick
    • Scissors
    • Permanent marker
    • Optional air filter spray
    • Tip: The washable cut-to-fit filters will last up to 5 years.
    • Tip: Spray the filters with air filter spray that sticks to the pad and attracts more particles. It washes off with a hose and can be reapplied with each use.
    • Warning:
    • Do not clean the pads with solvent. Solvent will harm the pads and may be hazardous.
