Step 1
Choose papers for your invitation envelopes. The exterior of your envelope should be a fairly heavy paper, but not as heavy as cardstock. You can choose lightweight printed or colored papers for the interior lining of the invitation envelope. When you buy paper to make your invitations, shop for enough paper and supplies to make the envelopes as well. Keep in mind that making larger size envelopes will require paper larger than the standard 8.5 by 11 inches.

Step 2
Create an envelope template. You can purchase templates at stationery or paper crafting supply shops, download them online or simply make one by deconstructing an envelope you already own. If you have drawn your own template or are using a printable one, trace it onto thin plastic or cardboard with a permanent marker and carefully cut out your custom envelope template. You may want to create a second template for a contrasting lining, made slightly smaller than the first.
-
Step 3
Make practice envelopes by cutting paper with a scalpel using your template. Fold the envelope into shape, creasing your fold lines with a craft stick or bone folder. Use your glue or adhesive and make sure your custom envelopes are secure. Check the size and shape of your envelope and make sure that it is the right size for your invitations. Make any necessary adjustments.

Step 4
Count your invitations and cut an appropriate number of envelopes using your template. For the neatest result, be sure to cut only one envelope at a time. Work in an assembly line fashion, first cutting all of your envelopes, then folding and lining, then gluing into place to speed up this process.

Step 5
Add any decorations or embellishments to your custom invitation envelopes. Finish preparing your invitations for mailing and address your envelopes. A strip adhesive dispenser works well for sealing or you can use a coordinating sticker to seal them.
