No matter what you collect, from figurines to pipes to knives, you can show them off in this beautiful display case.
Cover the inside lid of the box with velvet. The velvet should be something elegant but thin. You can also use satin or fabrics in dark colors. Light colors sometimes allow the wood to show through. Be sure and cover the sides as well as the lid underside. Instead of velvet or satin you can use printed paper, a section of a poster, felt, leather or simply paint it.
On a piece of paper draw the outline of the knife and cut it out barely larger than the actual knife. There are different things you can use to build the case up for the knife display. The idea is to build up the area around the knife while leaving a sunken spot where the knife will lay. Use paper, cardboard or even foam to do this. First put a couple of solid pieces of cardboard in the bottom of the box. Now start adding the pieces that have the knife shape.
Built the box up to within a quarter-inch from the top. To cover the display portion of the box lay a piece of velvet or satin over the entire thing. Use a thin layer of glue to affix the fabric. It takes some work to smooth the fabric into the knife shape without getting wrinkles. A pencil eraser or even a chopstick with fabric over the end will help. Work the fabric, smoothing the wrinkles from the sunken part to up and over the flat portions of the display box. Some people have a lot of trouble forming the fabric to the knife shape. If you'd rather, you can paint the knife-shaped area then attach the fabric to the area around the shape. One other thing you can do is to dip a piece of fabric in starch. As it begins to dry press it into the knife-shaped area to form. Allow to dry completely and cut off excess. It should now fit exactly in the shape. Glue it into place before moving on to cover the rest of the cardboard or foam.
You can print a card or labels for the display case and attach them to the velvet beside each knife.
The cases don't necessarily have to hold knives, either. You can make display boxes for lighters, pipes, coins, jewelry, figurines, arrowheads or other collectibles.
