  • Overview

Old photo-style greeting cards are a popular choice in the card aisle at the grocery store, but making them yourself can bring an extra smile to the recipient's face. With just a little time and effort, you can create a one-of-a-kind greeting card to celebrate your loved one's big day. Here's how.

    • Step 1

Select an unusual old photo. Sift through your own vintage photos for images that may include anything from traditional birthday cake blowouts to opening gifts at Christmas time. You may also find some fun images of your ancestors goofing off for the camera or embarrassing images of potty training or childhood tantrums. Once you find a few shots, carefully remove them from your photo album.
    • Step 2

Scan them. Scan your images at a high resolution at home on your own scanner or at public scanner locations at photo shops or stores' photo departments. Scan each photo separately and include the white border of the original shot. Save scans in jpeg format.

    • Step 3

Print photos from your computer onto photo paper and trim. You may need to use your photo software to darken colors or correct faint images before printing. Print on Best settings for glossy paper.
    • Step 4

Fold your card stock as instructed to make a half fold card. Attach the old photo print onto the front of the card with double-sided tape or with black photo corners for a more authentic look.
    • Step 5

Print a funny comment on the inside of the card that relates to the photograph. For example, if there is a picture of a crying baby on the front of the card, you can write something like, "Don't throw a tantrum, it's just another birthday."
    • Skill: Moderately Easy
    • Ingredients:

    • Don't use overly faded images. Even the best photo editing software may not be able to make them usable.
