Make An Origami Pagoda

This pagoda structure can be made as short or as tall as you like. Simply stack model upon model until the desired height is achieved.

This paper pagoda consists of several basic models stacked one upon the other. The models are identical, only their sizes are altered. Begin with a large square of paper and fold one model. Fold the next identical model from a square that is ½" smaller than the first. Decrease the beginning square size of each successive model by ½" and stack them as you go. The smallest model should form the top of the pagoda.

Use any paper you like for your practice model. Plain, white copy paper (or similar) works well. Once you have mastered the model, then move on to colored or patterned papers. Just make sure that any paper you use is at least as heavy as the practice paper described above.

Your work surface must be hard and flat in order to attain the sharpest creases possible. This is very important, as the sharpness of your creases will play a major role in how well your model keeps its shape. Use a table, hardback book, or a similar surface.

1. Position a square of paper on your work surface so that the edges are facing up and down, left and right. If you are using two-sided paper, make sure that the color you want for the exterior of the kettle is facing down.

2. Bring the left edge over to meet the right edge. Crease and unfold.

3. Bring the top edge down to meet the bottom edge. Crease and unfold.

4. Turn the square over and position it so that its points are now facing up and down, left and right.

5. Bring the left point over to meet the right point. Crease and unfold.

6. Bring the top point down to meet the bottom point. Crease and leave folded.

7. Grasp the left and right points of the resulting triangle and push inward. This will cause the model to collapse along the folds you just made. The result will be another triangle shape with folded flap sticking out from the back of the model and another sticking out from the front.

8. Fold the front flap to the left and fold the back flap to the right so that your model will lie flat. Position your model so that is flat against your work surface and the open end is facing toward you.

9. Bring the left point (top layer only) up to meet the triangle's top point. Crease and leave folded. Repeat for the right point. Turn the model over.



10. Repeat Step 9. The result will be a diamond shaped model.

11. Open up the right half of the diamond shape (top layer) and push the top right point down to meet the bottom point. The right side of the model should collapse into a square shape. Press flat. Repeat for the left side of the model. The model will now resemble a house - triangle at the top and two square shaped flaps at the bottom.

12. Turn the model over and repeat Step 11.

13. Bring the left side of the model (top layer only) over to meet the right side. Press flat.

14. Turn the model over and repeat Step 13. Both the front and back of the model should now be smooth.

15. Bring the lower left edge of the model over to meet the vertical center crease line to create a flap. Crease and leave folded. Repeat for the right side.

16. Turn the model over and repeat Step 15.

17. Bring the right side of the model (top layer only) over to meet the left side. Press flat.

18 Turn the model over and repeat Step 17.

19. Open up the two flaps that make up the model's top layer. As the flaps separate, the underlying bottom point will come up toward the top of the model and collapse along pre-existing crease lines into a horizontal, boat shaped flap. Press flat.

20. Turn the model over and repeat Step 19.

21. Bring the left side of the model (top layer only) over to meet the right side. Press flat. There will now be two square shaped flaps at the bottom of the model.

22. Turn the model over and repeat Step 21.

23. Bring the bottom edge of the left square (top layer only) over to lie along square's right edge. Crease and leave folded. Repeat for the right square so that both sides of the model are symmetrical.

24. Turn the model over and repeat Step 23.

25. Insert a finger into the open end of the model and carefully open it up.
