How To Make Your Own Baby Food

Save money and feed your son or daughter the healthiest food at the same time!

It's a known fact: baby food is expensive to buy! And, no matter what name brand of baby food that you buy, it's still manufactured, processed, and not as fresh as it could possibly be.

But, you can avoid the high cost of this necessity and feed your baby the natural, fresh foods that he or she loves. It's a relatively easy process you can do yourself that requires little time and effort.

To start with, let's look at vegetables. Vegetables are probably the easiest food you can prepare for your young son or daughter. Carrots, potatoes, sweet potatoes, peas, green beans, squash and red beets are the most common. Choose fresh vegetables that are currently in season. Thoroughly wash enough produce to make meals for one to two days. Then peel and inspect each piece and cut out any discolored or bad spots you may find. Cut the vegetables up into small pieces, add a splash of water or broth, and steam them in the microwave. Use a potato masher or a food processor, or food mill, to make a puree out of the vegetables. Then, add a little more water or broth, if needed, to make it a soft, easily eaten texture for your baby.

Special Instructions: You'll need to remove the pods from the peas. Squash, such as the yellow variety, will need to be cut in half, then have the seeds and stringy inside removed. After the squash is steamed, you'll need to remove the tasty flesh from the inside of the shell with a spoon. An ice cream scoop works well too!

You can mix one or more vegetables together to make a tasty combination for your son or daughter too.

Fruits such as apples, bananas, peaches, berries, and plums, and pears in pretty much the same way.



You'll need to wash the fruit thoroughly. Then, peel it and remove the pits and cores, et cetera. Inspect each piece and cut out any discolored or bad spots you may find. Cut the fruit into small pieces, add a splash of water or natural fruit juice, and steam in a microwave. Again, use a potato masher or a kitchen machine to make a puree out of the fruit. Add additional water or fruit juice to make it the right consistency for your baby. You can also puree other foods such as cottage cheese, then add it to a fruit.

Special Instructions: Bananas are the only fruit that can be peeled, mashed, and given to your son or daughter in its raw state. You might need to add a little water or fruit juice to make it a smoother consistency.

To make your own baby food from meat, choose fresh chicken, beef, turkey, et cetera, that is lean.

Remove any skin, bones, and fat. Then, either microwave it until it's tender or boil it in a little water on top of the stove- either way works fine. Place the meat in a food processor and puree it.

You can add a bit of this processed meat to any vegetable that you have already pureed. Try mixing up two of your baby's favorites, such as sweet potatoes and turkey, or chicken and potatoes, et cetera.
