When you think of Valentine's Day, you probably think of heart shaped boxes of candy, roses, and mushy cards. These are the same old presents that men have given women on that holiday for centuries.
While they are not totally unappreciated, today's Valentine is the modern woman who has different
wants and needs. Candy will only help to expand her waistline, while roses will wilt and die.
And, let's not forget the men in our lives! Traditionally, men weren't given gifts from their ladies on Valentine's Day. But, with the Women's Movement, and equality taking its place in relationships, it's not uncommon to give the man in your life a gift too!
So, instead of buying the traditional candy and roses, how about making your Valentine a gift of your own? Here are some gift ideas for you:
1. Scrapbooks are a very popular craft idea, and they are always appreciated by the receiver. All you basically need is a scrapbook kit and photos of your loved one, and you, of course! You could make the theme of the book "Our Life Together", or "My Funny Little Valentine", for example.
You can design the scrapbook however you wish by using the stickers and decorations that are included in the kit.
2. Gift baskets are also a thoughtful, useful gift for the man or for the woman in your life. If your man loves to go fishing, for example, why not buy a variety of fishing lures, bobbers, hooks, and other paraphernalia that he can use when he's out on the water? Also, buy a basket, some tissue paper, ribbon, and some colored cellophane paper. Line the bottom of the basket with the tissue paper, and then place the fishing related gifts inside. Then, you can use the ribbon to make a bow. Place the bow and some ribbon on the handle of the basket. Finally, cover the entire gift with the cellophane paper and present it to your loved one on the special holiday!
3. Personalized tee shirts, sweatshirts, tote bags, coffee cups, calendars also make nice gifts for a man or a woman. If you choose a tote bag or a coffee cup, you can put smaller gifts that you've made inside them. These smaller gifts can include jewelry, keychains, or a coupon! (see below)
4. Here's another idea for you- coupons that you make yourself would be a nice gift for your busy loved one too! If the gift is for your boyfriend, why not give him a coupon for a week's worth of cleaning his apartment? Or doing his laundry? Or cooking his meals? Or shopping for his groceries? If it's for your girlfriend, then you can give her a coupon for mowing her lawn, or doing her laundry, or even washing her car!
Or, if she needs some work done around her house, such as some shelves put up or a door lock replaced, do that for her as your gift!

5. How about a gift of time for the special man or woman that's in your life? You can pack up a picnic basket with some of his or her favorite foods, a bottle of wine, and a blanket. Then, take your Valentine to a quiet park and spend the afternoon together! It will give you a nice break too!
