How to Make Save the Date Magnets

By Michelle Powell-Smith

  • Overview

Save the date magnets are a great way to share your happy news and make sure that people know when to plan for your special day. Save the date announcements are typically sent well before invitations, and sending magnets makes sure it won't be forgotten. Making your own save the date magnets can cut costs substantially and allow you to create a unique save the date that coordinates with your wedding colors and theme.
    • Step 1

Choose the software you want to use to design your save the date magnet. You can use any word processing software like Open Office or Microsoft Word, a photo editor like Adobe Photoshop or GIMP, or a desktop publishing application. Use the program you are most familiar with to make this process easy. Save the Date magnets are typically business card sized, so you can use a business card template found in your software if you prefer. If you are working without a template, 3 by 2.5 inches is standard.
    • Step 2

Use images, your engagement photo and a colorful background to create a memorable save the date magnet. If you have already chosen a wedding theme and colors, incorporate these into your save the date magnets, or simply choose options that reflect both of your personalities. Include the date, bride and groom's names, the words "Save the Date" and your wedding website.

    • Step 3

Print your completed save the date magnet image onto regular paper. Make sure that it prints correctly and that all images are properly aligned. Many programs have options that make printing business cards especially easy, replicating the image and text into multiple cards to print on a single sheet.
    • Step 4

Print your finished magnets. If you are using printable magnets, print directly onto the magnetic sheet with your printer (see Resources below). If you are using adhesive topped magnets, print your design onto cardstock and cut to size with a paper cutter. Peel off the adhesive and attach your printed card to the magnet.
    • Step 5

Mail your save the date magnets to friends and family. You can include them with a save the date card or simply send them alone in a small envelope.
