Making American Express Credit Card Payments Electronically

  • Overview

    American Express offers electronic options to pay online or by phone. Online you can opt to pay any amount toward your current balance on any of your registered American Express cards. You can also sign up for AutoPay to pay a set amount toward your balance automatically each month. If you would rather not pay online or can't access the website you can pay by phone. This article will explain how to pay your American Express bill online.

  • Make One-time Payment Online

    • Step 1

      Sign up for an account. If you do not have one already, create an account at Americanexpress.com by clicking "Create an Account" under the "FIRST-TIME USER?" title located just above the log-in fields on the left hand side.
    • Step 2

      Register your cards. If the card you would like to pay does not appear on your "Summary of Accounts," click "Register another now" located on the top right.
  • Step 3

    Select the card you would like to pay by clicking on its icon in your "Summary of Accounts" screen.
  • Step 4

    Click "PAY BILL," found on the right hand side of your screen directly beneath the box displaying your "Payment Due."
  • Step 5

    Choose which bank you would like the funds drawn from. Clicking on the pull-down entitled "Select Bank" will reveal the bank accounts you currently have available. Select an account that has sufficient funds to cover the payment you are about to make. If this account is not an option in your list, select "Add a Bank" to enter the applicable routing and account numbers for the account of your choice.
  • Step 6

    Click the circle next to the "Payment Amount" you would like. Choose "Minimum Payment," "Current Balance," or "Other Amount." If you select other amount please specify that amount in the field immediately to the right of your selection.
  • Step 7

    Select your desired "Payment Date" from the pull-down menu. Your payment due date is reported beneath this pull-down menu.
  • Step 8

    Click "Continue" to advance to the next screen.
  • Step 9

    Verify your payment information, including the bank account, payment amount and payment date. Once you click "Submit," you will not be able to change your payment information and you may be unable to cancel a payment.
  • Step 10

    Print your payment confirmation for your records.


  • Set up AutoPay

    • Step 1

      Click on "Enroll in Autopay" link located under the "AUTOPAY" box underneath the "ACCOUNTS AT A GLANCE" column.
    • Step 2

      Click "Enroll Now" for the account of your choice in the "AUTOPAY" window.
    • Step 3

      Select your account type.
    • Step 4

      Enter your nine-digit bank routing number.
    • Step 5

      Enter your bank account number.
    • Step 6

      Re-enter your account number.
    • Step 7

      Select to AutoPay either your "Total New Balance," "Minimum Payment Amount," or "Fixed $ Amount."
    • Step 8

      Select the number of days following your statement close date you would like you automatic payment made.
    • Step 9

      Read the "Terms and Conditions."
    • Step 10

      Click either "I AGREE, ENROLL IN AUTOPAY" or "I DISAGREE, CANCEL THIS TRANSACTION."
    • Step 11

      If you agree to enroll then verify the information carefully and click "Submit."
    • Step 12

      Print the confirmation for your records.
  • Pay by phone

    • Step 1

      Call 1-800-IPAY-AXP (1-800-472-9297).
    • Step 2

      Follow the instructions to pay your bill.
    • Step 3

      Write down the payment confirmation number for your records.

    • Tip: Check to be sure you have sufficient funds in your selected bank account each time a payment is made.
    • Warning:
    • AutoPay may not work for several weeks after enrolling. Call American Express customer service to verify your payment will be made before your next payment due date following enrolling in AutoPay.
