Creating a one of a kind lamp to enhance your home decor is easy, and fun. Turn a family Heirloom into a display piece.
Creating a lamp from a family heirloom or a favorite piece is not hard. The hard part will be in deciding which treasures you want to use.
Some materials are easier to work with, but all can be used to create a lamp that is unique and attractive. Wood and metal are the easiest to work with, but china, glass and plastic are not impossible.
The first thing you will need to do is make a channel through the object you have selected to carry the electrical cord. You will need to have the channel for the cord start on the side about 1/2 inch up from the bottom, otherwise your lamp will not sit flat. If your lamp is hollow consider filling the interior after you have inserted your electrical cord with sand, marbles or some other medium to weight it, and give it more stability.
If you have a hollow lamp base then you will need to use some threaded pipe or tubing to support the light fixture. Thread your electrical cord through the lamp. Leave about 5 inches at the top to attach the screw in base for the bulb. Attach the plug to the other end, making sure that you leave enough to travel to the outlet.
Attach the screw base for the lamp to the cord, and screw into the threaded pipe, or securely attach to the top of your lamp base. If you are using a lamp harp (the part the lampshade attaches to) you will need to make sure that it is attached firmly to the screw base for the light.
Attach your lampshade, screw in a lightbulb, plug your lamp in and enjoy your new one of a kind lamp.
