What Is a Male Enhancer?

By Nacie Carson

  • Overview

The term "male enhancer" refers to any method used to enlarge a man's penis. The term was originally used by advertising companies to make the concept palatable to print and TV audiences; however, over the past few years it has been absorbed into colloquial speech. Male enhancers can include anything from at-home treatments and natural stimulants to prescribed medication and surgical alteration.
  • Pills and Creams

Most male enhancers are over-the-counter pills or creams that claim to enlarge the body part through natural or herbal ingredients. One of the most advertised and well-known example of such enhancers is the product Enzyte. There is little scientific evidence to support the claims of these types of male enhancers; however, they may produce the desired results through a mental, or placebo effect. In fact, studies that have been done on the ingredients of natural enhancers have shown that they often contain harmful contaminants, such as bacteria, lead and even animal feces.
  • Pumps

Another form of at-home male enhancer is the pump. An enhancement pump is applied to the penis and, through applied vacuum pressure, boosts blood flow to the shaft and helps increase its size. The vacuum aspect of the pump can either be powered manually or by a motor, but users should be cautious not to over-pump, as this can cause damage to the penis.

  • Weights

Small weights can also be used as male enhancers via the technique of "hanging." This method has been used by native African tribes for centuries, and consists of attaching light weights to the part of the shaft near the torso with a thin rope. Weights are one of the few male enhancers that have been shown to produce the desired results. However, nerve damage, scarring and erection difficulties can occur as well.
  • Pressure Methods

Individuals can create an enhanced effect through increasing blood in the shaft by adding pressure with their hands. This technique requires the individual to pull the member away from their torso to allow more room for the blood to flow. Like other male enhancers, this technique can produce some dangerous side effects, such as burst blood vessels.
  • Surgical Techniques

In extreme situations, an individual may want to be enhanced surgically. Urologists can perform girth enhancement surgeries or lengthening procedures depending on the physical condition of the patient. Both procedures are risky and can produce undesirable side effects, including the inability to achieve an erection. With a low patient satisfaction rate, surgical male enhancers are generally discouraged.
