Step 1
Determine if you are eligible to file online for free using the Comptroller of Maryland's website using their iFile program. To use the iFile program you must either fill out form 502 (the long form) or the short form, 503. You can not use the state of Maryland's iFile program if you are filing out either form 500CR or 515.

Step 2
Collect your personal tax information forms, including all W-2, W-2G, 1099-R and 1099-G forms, as you will need these to fill in information through the iFile program.
-
Step 3
Complete your Federal Tax Form. This iFile system on the state of Maryland Comptroller's website will ask you for calculations that you made when filling out your federal tax information.

Step 4
Determine if you have the correct Internet browser and Adobe Acrobat software to use the iFile program. You must have version 4.0 or higher of either Internet Explorer and Netscape to use the application. You also must have Javascript and cookies enabled on your browser. The required version of Adobe Acrobat is 4.0 or higher.

Step 5
Visit the state of Maryland Comptroller's website and select the electronic filing link on the home page. This link is on the left hand frame and is the second option under filing information.
-
Step 6
At the bottom of the page after clicking the link in step 5, select the correct form and year to open up the iFile program.
-
Step 7
Answer all the questions that the program asks you. When you have finished filling in the information iFile will tell you how much you owe or are due as a refund.
-
Step 8
Select the option you wish for your Maryland state tax refund if you are eligible to receive one this year. The amount will be sent to you through standard U.S. mail. If you owe money, you can pay online, following the directions that iFile provides. If you will be mailing a check, print out the payment form and mail it to the address provided on the print-out, along with your payment.

Step 9
Print a copy of your Maryland State Tax Form for your records.
