Mental Health Tips: Benefits Of Color Therapy

The underlying theories of colors therapies, a form of alternative medicine. How to make colour changes in your environment to promote well-being.

The mystical temples of the Pharaohs in Ancient Egypt are thought to be the originations of the alternative medicine colour therapy, which has also come to be known as chromatherapy, light therapy or colourology. It has only relatively recently emerged as a form of treatment in the western world so dominated by orthodox healing methods. Undoubtedly, many regarded colour therapy as highly dubious in its healing claims at first, but on closer inspection of the scientifically based theory behind it, have come to accept it as a valid branch of the medicinal world.

The theory is quite simple. Because light has a frequency, it can be assumed that light of different colours have different frequencies. When a human is exposed to a particular colour light, his or her emotions or bodily functions will be affected in some way. For example, it has been found that when exposed to prolonged red light, a person's blood pressure will rise, and the opposite will happen when exposed to a prolonged blue light.

There are a wide variety of methods used by various colour therapists when choosing how to administer the colour. In some cases the patient spends some time in a coloured room, in others they may have light shone through coloured glass onto a particular area of the body. The important point is that the patient is exposed to the correct colour for a long-lasting period of time. The effectiveness of treatment often depends upon how old the patient is, their general state of health, the nature of the disease or problem and other such factors.

Over the years colour therapy has been developed to be able to cope with many different illnesses. Therapists have been able to identify the frequency of a particular disease or ailment, and subsequently match this frequency to a very precise colour with exactly the same frequency. It's rather like fine-tuning a radio into a particular station.

As with all holistic healing methods, colour therapy focuses on getting to the root of the problem and trying to prevent it from happening again, rather than merely treating the symptoms, as is the case with conventional medicine. Often this entails the patient agreeing to specific lifestyle changes to improve their health and complement the alternative medicine. Such changes are often in the areas of diet and exercise. The therapy can also be used in conjunction with meditation or yoga to enhance the beneficial effects.

Although colour therapy was originally scoffed at by medical experts it has gradually come to be accepted as a legitimate healing method. It can be very useful for patients who have found that conventional medicines do not have the required effect for their particular problem. Also, as with many other forms of alternative medicine, such as Holographic Repatterning, it is generally far less invasive - no instruments are poked around in your body.

Because of the simplicity of the theory behind colour therapy you can start reaping the benefits yourself, by changing the colours in your own home or office. A touch of orange signifies prosperity, yellow happiness, whilst green promotes harmony. Watch out for red though as it signifies anger! Also try and incorporate a wide variety of colours into your environment, as experts believe this to be most advantageous.
