Overview
Mineral makeup is claimed to be all-natural and good for any skin type. It is promoted to cover all blemishes and blend uneven skin tones flawlessly without leaving a heavy makeup look. There are a few different main ingredients that can be helpful to oily skin. However, some of the ingredients can be irritating for any skin type.
Function
Mineral makeup is a pressed powder that is used instead of liquid makeup as a foundation to even skin tones and conceal pores.
Types
There are different types of mineral makeup. Some contain natural minerals for colorant. Some contain petroleum-based dyes for colorant. The powdered base may be composed of talc, clay or bismuth oxychloride. Each type of base ingredient provides a different level of opacity and ability to even out skin tones and hide blemishes.
Misconceptions
Many companies that promote mineral makeup claim their products are all-natural but may contain ingredients, such as dyes and perfumes, that are created from petroleum-based chemicals. Basic powder ingredients, such as bismuth oxychloride, do not occur in nature but are still claimed to be a natural ingredient.
Benefits
Powdered makeup helps to draw oils out of the skin which helps to keep the oils from clogging pores. Natural ingredients for base ingredients are zinc oxide, titanium dioxide or clay. These base ingredients have a lower rate of allergic reactions than bismuth oxychloride and talc.
Warning:
Many ingredients, such as colorants, perfumes and base minerals, may cause an allergic reaction, such as acne, redness or a rash. Always test on a small area to check for an allergic reaction to any new product that is used on the skin.
Summary
Mineral makeup may be a good solution to reduce the oiliness of skin. However, patch testing is necessary to test for sensitivity to the ingredients in different brands of mineral makeup.
