How Much Money Will Energy Efficiency Really Save You?

Find out how you can save money on heating and cooling costs by saving energy the easy way by reading this informative article!

Nowadays, saving energy is on everyone's mind, including the collective mind of the United States Government. Not only does reducing your energy usage save you dollars and cents, but it also helps to protect our precious environment. Because, the less energy that we Americans use, the less

that energy plants have to work. Energy plants produce pollution into the air. Therefore, if they create less energy, they also create less pollution.

Experts estimate that, in one recent year alone, consumers and businesses together saved billions of dollars in energy costs.

In your home, for example, appliances are large users of energy. If you're in the market for a new appliance, the government recommends that you choose a stove, refrigerator, or freezer that carries the Energy Star (TM) seal. Energy Star (TM) is a program that checks products to make sure they are energy efficient. If they are, then they attain a seal of approval from Energy Star (TM). This program is required to follow rigid guidelines that have been established by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the United States Department of Energy (USDE).

It's easy to find an appliance that complies with the Energy Star (TM) standards. And, you don't have to sign up for anything, or fill out any paperwork. Buying a new appliance and saving energy at the same time only requires that you purchase the one you want, take it home, and use it!

Products that are given the Energy Star (TM) seal include stoves, refrigerators, freezers, air conditioning units, heating units, light bulbs, light fixtures, hot water heaters, computers, washing machines, dishwashers, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, windows, doors, and even entire homes! All of these machines and products can waste a large amount of energy!

Now that you know what seal to look for when you're choosing an energy - using product, you may wonder how much money using one of these products can REALLY save you. Experts can only estimate that an energy efficient home can save the occupants approximately thirty - three per cent on their total energy bill. It's also estimated that you can save approximately forty dollars by changing the type of bulbs you use. Specifically, that's forty dollars during the life of the bulb if you use a fluorescent light bulb instead of an incandescent one.

Using energy efficient products is only half of the solution. You also need to practice saving energy whenever it's possible in your home. For example, make sure that your furnace is well maintained and running efficiently. And, turn the thermostat on your heating unit down at night. Turn off lights that aren't necessary, and turn off your computer when it's not in use.

How much- in dollars and cents- that you save is dependent on the price you pay for electricity, for example, and the amount you use. You can figure out approximately how much an appliance or a machine costs you to use it, though. To do this, you'll need to know how much you pay for one kilowatt hour of electric. Your electricity provider can tell you this amount. Then, check the appliance or machine to find out what its wattage is. Divide that number by a thousand. This will tell you the number of kilowatts that it uses every hour. Finally, multiply the kilowatts per hour by the price you pay times the hours it is used. The final answer will tell you how much money it costs to use that appliance or machine.
