I would not buy all trendy items unless you have money to burn. No, I would take a classic suit and I would pair with it something updated like trendy pieces. I might put a piece of costume jewelry like an interesting bead. Beads add an update to a classic look. I like to buy expensive suits because it is classic and will not go out of style the next season. I will pair a scarf with it or a different inside piece. Inside pieces under a basic do a lot. I have a rule and the rule is, every time you go to a store buy a pair of slacks or a blouse; always buy the piece that goes with it. This gives you a base. You want to create the basis in your wardrobe. Never pick an odd color pant and not get that odd color blouse or sweater that goes with it, because you will never come back, or it is not there when you do come back. You want to create a base that is a solid color. It should be either an inside base or an outside.
An inside base would be a pair of slacks and a sweater that is in one color. Do you see how you could pull out of your closet this outfit, throw a blazer on top and be very smartly dressed? An outside base would be your jacket, your skirt or pants in one color. That is an outside base and then you can pop in little inside piece that change it. There are lot of animal prints in this season and that is something you could do under a suit to give it a fresh new look. Animal prints have moved into what I consider classic. They keep reinventing them and they keep coming back. I have them from every season but remember it is a winter piece.
