Acne is a disturbing condition that is disfiguring, emotionally scarring and psychologically draining. For some it is temporary and for others it continues into adulthood. Relief is a topic widely discussed and well marketed in today's society. Typically, acne is triggered by the release of hormones flooding the system, causing an overload of metabolic by-products in the skin. Finding a natural source of medicine is a preferred course of action by many people.
  • Warning

You can lower the toxicity load on your skin by eating foods that do not cause inflammation. Anything that raises your blood sugar will trigger a release of insulin and hormones in a very complicated process. Proteins and fats are neutral in the inflammation process and are used in the body for muscle, tissue repair and a host of other functions necessary for health. Carbohydrates are energy foods. Our body converts them into sugars that can be used for energy. If the food that you eat is as close to its natural state as possible, you will have less flair ups and less of a toxic load for the body to clear out. For instance, instead of drinking orange juice (the liquid of several oranges) eat one orange. Both will occupy the same space in your gut but will act differently in the metabolism process. Slow down the insulin release by always having protein and fat with every food intake. Eat food as pure as possible without synthetic preservatives and additives that the body will have to try to eliminate.
  • Prevention/Solution

Since the metabolic processes that depend on the largest organ of our body--our skin, is so complicated, there are several aspects that can be addressed. Sores develop, bacteria grows, stress increases and a cycle develops that can be almost impossible to break. All of this usually happens while the body is changing into adulthood and life is far from being normal. Try to use a multi-faceted approach to clearing up acne as quickly as possible.

  • Misconceptions

Acne is not caused by poor hygiene. If that was the case, young children would have the worst skin of the population. Dirt is not clogging your pores causing eruptions that need to be cleaned and scrubbed away. It is an effect of internal processes that are usually on overload. You can scrub your face everyday and paint on lotions and creams, but they will not stop the cause of the acne.
  • Considerations

Since we know that acne is a result of several influences, hormones, stress, diet and environment, all of them need to be addressed. The release of hormones during puberty cannot be stopped. It is a process that is normal and natural, but it causes an extra stress on the body as it goes through this phase. It is during this time that changes are necessary like extra sleep, improved nutrition, quality relationships providing support and plenty of fresh air and exercise.
  • Types

There are many types of natural medicines that can help clear up acne. If you remember that prescription drugs are often made from plant sources, you will realize that there are many natural remedies that might work as well or better than the synthetic forms. Topical treatments that increase skin healing properties are Vitamin E and aloe vera gel. Solutions that can emulsify oils are glycerin soaps and water. Substances to reduce bacteria are tea tree oil or witch hazel and simple water. Masks like clay or cornstarch will remove oils and dry the skin, but might also increase the skin's oil production so use them sparingly. Vitamin A has also been found to be low in patients with severe acne.
