Overview
New York Stock Market Opening TimeNew York houses two of the largest and most dynamic stock exchanges in the world, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the NASDAQ. Additionally, the exchange formerly titled the American Stock Exchange, or AMEX, is located in New York but is now being run under the umbrella of the NYSE.
Hours
Since, 1985, the New York Stock Exchange has been open for normal trading Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern Time. The NYSE is open year-round with the exception of most national holidays. The NASDAQ Stock Exchange maintains the same schedule as the NYSE.
NYSE History
The NYSE began in 1792 when 24 stockbrokers met under a Buttonwood tree on Wall Street in Lower Manhattan to draft a constitution and form the "New York Stock & Exchange Board." The NYSE has since grown to be the largest exchange in the world in terms of dollar value of its listed securities.
NASDAQ History
The NASDAQ exchange began in 1971 as the world's first electronic stock market. Currently trading more than 3,000 companies, the NASDAQ is weighted toward technology-oriented firms but also includes financial, communication, retail and transportation stocks.
Pre-Market Hours Trading
Both the NYSE and the NASDAQ exchanges allow pre-market trades from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Monday through Friday. These hours are open to small investors but are normally the province of institutional investors so the trading can be thin and illiquid.
After-Market Hours Trading
Both the NYSE and the NASDAQ exchanges allow after hours trading from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
