Where is Newport located in Oregon? Newport is right on the central coast of Oregon immediately west of Corvallis. We're about 2½ hours south and west of Portland and about an hour and 45 minutes north and west of Eugene.
Newport is right on the central coast of Oregon immediately west of Corvallis. We're about 2½ hours south and west of Portland and about an hour and 45 minutes north and west of Eugene. If you look at Oregon from north to south, Newport is just about in the middle, but right on the coast.
Newport is one of the oldest communities along the coast. Equina Bay was one of the earliest areas settled in this part of the coast. Folks came over in the early 1900s by wagon or by train or by horse and often times many would spend the summer down on the beach and the area called Bay Beach, which is still part of the history of the community.
Another thing that makes Newport unique is that we have a well-rounded economy. For many of the communities along the coast tourism is pretty much their only staple as far as economics go. But we have a pretty active and enviable fishing economy as well as some wood products through the Georgia Pacific Mill just east of us. Tourism of course is very important, but also we have a couple of several facilities that do cutting edge research and development here. So I like to look at the community as a little more rounded than some of the other coastal communities.
