A Nightlife Guide For Norfolk

A guide to some of the best nightclubs and restuarants in the Norfolk, VA area.

Norfolk is known as the city with the United States' largest Naval Base, but there is much more to Norfolk than military credentials. Norfolk is located on the east coast, directly on the beautiful Chesapeake Bay. If you are ever visiting Norfolk, there are plenty of nightclubs, bars, and restaurants to choose from to guarantee a great time.

Waterside is one of Norfolk's best known nightspots. A huge facility located Downtown on the waterfront, Waterside contains several bars and restaurants. Have a Nice Day Cafe features themes from retro TV shows to vintage decor, and fun funky music with a huge dancefloor and DJs. For those looking for a milder evening, there is an Outback Steakhouse, and Philip's Seafood which serves up some of the best seafood in the area. Jillian's is a huge "adult playground" style bar and restaurant that features arcades, skiball, and lots of other fun things to do while enjoying a beer or cocktail. For those looking for a good laugh, there's the Comedy Zone with live stand-up acts, or Crocodile Rocks Dueling Pianos, where live piano players play requests and let clubgoers sing along. It also contains a Hooters and Joe's Crab Shack for casual fare.

The Norva, a huge live entertainment venue, hosts some of the largest national acts to tour the US, and also hosts local bands on certain nights. This two-story theater boasts several bars, an outdoor area, VIP backstage access, and the latest sound and lighting. Attached to the back of the Norva is the Backstage Cafe, where concertgoers can grab a bite to eat before the show.



Downtown Norfolk is quickly becoming one of the busiest and fastest growing areas. Ghent, a neighborhood within downtown, has several exciting restaurants and bars. Magnolia Steakhouse has some of the best steak and original dishes, along with a full service bar and poolroom. The Taphouse features beers from all over the world, as well as live bands on weekends, and superb service. The Colley Cantina offers great Mexican food, and is famous for its delicious margaritas. Cora, a southern style gourmet bar and restaurant, is popular for its Sunday Brunches. These are just a few of the many gourmet restaurants in the Ghent area.

If entertainment is what you're looking for, the Harrison Opera House is a sure bet for ballet, plays, operas, and occasional concerts. A fairly new facility, the Harrison Opera House is beautifully built and guarantees a romantic night on the town. The Wells theater is another highlight for watching a play, and has an older, classical interior. Additionally, the Naro Theater carries the latest independent films and features balcony seating, a red velvet curtain, and affordable refreshments.

In the summer, Norfolk is sure to entertain. Harborfest is Norfolk's largest summertime celebration, and is held in June near Waterside. A full weekend long, Harborfest has something for everyone including fireworks, face painting for the kids, live music, and lots of great food.
