Early people stored their grains mixed with aromatics like bay or eucalyptus leaves or inedibles like ashes or sulfur to repel

The first step in pest control for every household is to find out how the pest is getting in and seal them out. Uncapped chimneys, defective roofs can give entry to rats, mice, flies, and spiders. Small cracks in walls and opening around pipes let in roaches, ants, and rodents. Inspect and repair your home. Make sure all entry ways are sealed and the screens are tight and in good repair.

The next step is to eliminate dampness in your home; pests need moisture and water to survive. Look for leaks in water pipes and other sources. Make sure to seal drains when not in use. Don't leave damp laundry on the floor or bins. Consider the drip tray under the refrigerator as a water supply for pests. Make sure water is not pooling under sinks. Dry out your house and many pest will leave. You can also starve out pests by keeping your counters and cupboards clean of crumbs. Leave no containers that are easily accessed by pests. Store everything in plastic bins. Vacuum and sweep everyday.

Do not keep grocery store bags or boxes. Bugs live in the seams and crevices. Throw out old beverage cartons, bugs love them. Do not leave out dog or cat food. Put your garbage out every night.

Roast or freeze out pests. Very high and very low temperatures eliminate most household pests. Use your heater to make your house very warm for a couple of hours or open all the window in a freezing winter to freeze out pests. Roaches die at 23 degrees.

A good time to do this is before you move into a home.

Try one of these traps for fun. A wide mouthed jar, put potato, banana peel or dog food in it. Smear petroleum jelly on the inside rim. Put in a corner of a room or under a sink and see what crawls into it in the night.

Spread Boric Acid powder in cracks and crevices to kill roaches. It is safe and effective.

The best way to keep pests at bay is to prevent them to begin with.
