This article outlines several different types of foot and heel ailments and suggests a variety of insoles for treating each aliment from arch support to gel insoles and form-fitting spongy insoles.
Most acute arch pain is caused by the inflammation of the plantar fascia, a broad section of fibrous tissue at the bottom of the foot. This can be caused by over pronation, or flat feet, a condition which has a genetic basis.
Orhopedic insoles are available in a variety of shapes and designs. For arch pain caused by flat feet, insoles with arch supports that lift the foot and prevent overpronation usually solve the problem without further medical treatment. The function of the natural arch is to distribute pressure. Insoles with silicone gel absorb shock with each step and distribute pressure throughout the foot to prevent plantar fascitis and other ailments.Mid-size insoles are recommended for most cases of plantar fascitis and they provide comfort, since they are soft and form-fitting. The gel is located in problem area and prevents pressure from reaching vulnerable areas of the foot. Some insoles have blue silicone packs spread throughout the entire insole or just across the middle to protect the metatarsal muscles.
Many insoles are made of a spongy material rather than gel and can be cut to fit the size of the shoe. These insoles provide comfort and shock absorption, but focus on the entire foot rather than on specific areas. They often contain special materials proven to provide relief. Some are made of a light material called polyurethane covered with neoprene which provides support and absorbs shock.
Heel spur can be treated with an insole made from visvelastic polymer gel. The insole is placed in a position where it cushions the heel bone and prevents excess motion, especially the rocking motion which creates discomfort. Some heel cups are made of spongy material which allows the skin to breathe and further reduces the burning, itchy sensation which occurs with heel spur.
Whichever insole you use, make sure you are also wearing shoes that are a comfortable fit. Insoles can be worn with a variety of shoe styles, and the same insoles can be used for several different shoes.
