Learn the right information to bring and the right questions to ask at your next medical appointment to ensure you get the best care.
First and foremost, make an appointment at a convenient time for you. Make sure you are not late. For each person late for an appointment, doctors' schedules are set back. Doctors need their clinics to run efficiently, and you can help do your part by making appointments at times that are suitable for your family and arriving early if at all possible. Remember to factor in the time it takes you to check in and settle insurance co-pays.
Be prepared to answer common questions related to your condition both from the nurse and the doctor. Examples include: where and when does it hurt? Does anything aggravate it? Does anything make it feel better? How long has this bothered you? By thinking about the answers to these questions before the appointment, you will save time with your responses.
It is often beneficial to make a list of things you want to discuss with your doctor. By writing down the issues you want to talk about, you will not risk forgetting something important. Some patients also find it helpful to practice what they plan to say, especially if the symptoms they are experiencing are confusing to them.
Even though clinics keep medical records, it is best if the patient keeps their own list of medications they are taking; prescription, over the counter, herbal, and otherwise. Knowing this information will help your doctor prescribe safe medication for use with your condition. If you have the information with you, a prescription can be written much more quickly.
While the doctor is speaking with you about a treatment plan for your condition, take notes to remember what he says. If you feel that note taking is not an option, bring another person with to your appointment whose sole purpose is to help remember what the doctor explains.
If there is any part of a care plan you disagree with or don't understand, do not hesitate to ask your doctor to explain further. Care plans can only be as successful as the individual carrying them out. Therefore if there is something you aren't sure about, it is best to have it explained again.
Remember, if you are unhappy with your doctor visit in any way, you can always make a second appointment with a different doctor.
