During the summer, spring, and fall seasons a lot of bicycling is done around Portland. We have a couple of bike shops that will rent bikes to visitors and we have some great bike trails downtown as well as in Forest Park, which is just a few miles outside of downtown. If you rode your bike up to the park it would take you 25-30 minutes. It's a 5000-acre park, completely undeveloped except for hiking and mountain biking trails. There's also a lot of bicycle traffic on the city streets, this is definitely a bike friendly town. The cars are used to dealing with the bicyclists and we have a biking trail on the Willamette River downtown. It is a three-mile loop, which is very nice for visitors and it connects Waterfront Park to the steel bridge.
There is lots of hiking in Forest Park and the McLay Park, which is right next door to Forest Park. There is white water rafting in Clackamus County, which is the next county over. They have several companies that offer white water rafting tours there and then in Columbia County, which is the next county over to the west. There is also a kayaking facility where you can rent kayaks or take guided tours. They even have a freshwater swimming pool where you can practise paddling before you go out on the river.
There is horseback riding in the Columbia River Gorge. There are a couple of companies that offer horseback riding in the gorge.
