PageMaker is an older program that is no longer being made. Adobe is now making a new program called InDesign. PageMaker is similar to Quark and they are both lay-out or publishing programs. So you take your illustrations that made in Illustrator or Photoshop and you use PageMaker to arrange them on a page and it allows you to play around with the text. Magazines and newspapers use PageMaker or Quark to design their lay-out.

Everything that you can do in PageMaker you can still do it InDesign, only the program requires a little more memory, and there are some other differences as well that I am encountering right now as we are switching over from one program to another.

These programs take images, place them, shrink them, bring in text, and getting it right for certain presses if you are printing a magazine or newspaper. This might involve color managers and special formatting so that the printing press can just put the files into their machines and go.

If you want to create a book or magazine, that's where learning a publishing program would come in. The programs are all pretty easy for beginners and come with templates and tutorials.
