The Arboretum is open from dawn to dusk, seven days a week, free of charge. The five-mile, year round trail system is open to hiking, jogging, bird watching, non-motorized biking horseback riding, and cross-country skiing on groomed winter trails. A number of trails have hard-packed surfaces suitable for wheelchair access. Enjoy a picnic, take some photos, look for birds (over 150 species have been spotted). Pets are permitted on a leash. Trail maps are available at the Arboretum. The plant collection contains over 300 species or varieties of trees and shrubs. The Arboretum used to be a part of the Old Maine State Hospital, where all of the mentally retarded people were housed.

Capitol Park - Directly across the street from the Maine State Capitol building.
East Side Landing - Located on the East Bank of the Kennebec River, this park has picnic tables, a great playground for kids and a boat launch. It also has plenty of green space to spread out.
