The city has a park that includes a water park, skateboard park, lots of great pavilions, and a wonderful play area. We always take our grandchildren there, whenever they come to visit. We also have a State Park just a few miles east of here with great hiking trails and the Apple River runs through that park. We have a small river that runs through the city called the Galena River and that is where the trail goes out to the Mississippi and you can rent canoes and kayaks.
Grant Park, which is our city park, was constructed around the turn of the century. It has got that great old fashioned feel with a beautiful fountain that was refurbished last year, a gazebo for musical events. Lots of weddings take place in this park. It has 13 gardens that are all cared for by our local volunteers. From the park, when you are at the peak of the hill, you get an excellent view of the city and all the wonderful architecture with the steeples sticking out; it's very, very picturesque.
