How to Find a Person by Email for Free

By Scott Herring

  • Overview

In this digitized and interconnected era, finding a lost person is much easier than it once was. People once had to rely on personal classified ads placed in newspapers all over the country, on police reports, or even on shows like "America's Most Wanted." Today, you can make use of the Internet to locate someone by email. It can be quite uncomplicated if you know a few tricks.
    • Step 1

Turn on your computer and start up your Internet browser. Start with one of the Internet white pages (see Resources). Internet white pages like these function just like regular phone book white pages, but cover the entire country.
    • Step 2

Go to the "Reverse Lookup" tab at the Internet white pages. Here, you can search by the first name, last name and age of the person you are looking for. The Internet white pages will go out and search for the person, free of charge. If a site tries to charge you something, go to another website.

    • Step 3

Go to another similar web page like if you don't have any initial luck. There are a number of web pages like these and they all function in essentially the same way. Some seem to cover a larger database (and hence are able to find more people), but it is rarely clear which one is the best to find the very specific person you are looking for.
    • Step 4

Try general search engines next. Go to Google, for instance, at Search for the name of the person you are looking for. Include the middle initial and put the whole name inside quote marks. This will work if the name is unusual, but if it is a more common name, start to add more information. If the person was in the Army, for instance, you might search "John Smith" "First Infantry Division." There are many, many possibilities for this kind of search.
    • Step 5

Search for the person in the web pages of any organizations that you know the person belonged to. Nearly every organization has some sort of web presence now and if the person is there, the email will likely be there, too.
