Where Do I Place a Birth Control Patch?

By Contributing Writer

  • Overview

The birth control patch, also known as Ortho Evra, is a very popular contraception choice for women who enjoy the convenience of only thinking about birth control once a week. The patch distributes hormones directly through your skin to prevent pregnancy. Birth control with Ortho Evra is as easy as applying a new patch once each week, except for the week of your period. The birth control patch is easy to apply and can be worn on four areas of the body. You can choose the location that is best for you.
    • Step 1

Choose where you want to apply the birth control patch. The patch can be applied to four different locations--on the outside of your upper arm, on the back or front of your upper torso, on your stomach, or on your buttocks. While the patch can be applied on the upper torso, do not place it directly on your breasts. You do not have to apply it to the same location each week.
    • Step 2

Make sure your skin is clean and dry before you apply the patch. Do not apply makeup or lotion on the specific location where you apply your patch.

    • Step 3

Remove a new birth control patch from its individual foil packaging by tearing the top edge.
    • Step 4

Use your fingernail to peel the patch and its plastic liner form the foil liner. Make sure you remove the plastic lining along with the patch, as it will help you apply the patch without touching the medicated side.
    • Step 5

Grasp a corner of the plastic lining. Slowly peel about half of the lining off the patch, while being careful to avoid touching the sticky side of the patch.
    • Step 6

Hold the plastic lining. Use it to place the sticky side of the birth control patch on your skin. Press down. Once the patch is firmly attached to your skin, peel the rest of the plastic lining off the back of the patch.
    • Step 7

Hold the patch down for 10 seconds to ensure it will adhere to your skin. Make sure all of the corners are firmly stuck to your body.
    • Step 8

Replace your birth control patch once a week, except for the week of your period.
    • Skill: Easy
    • Tip: When deciding where to place the patch, think about what clothes you will be wearing that week. If you frequently wear sleeveless shirts, placing the patch on your upper arm may not be the best option for you. If you will be wearing a bikini, placing the patch on your buttock will keep it out of sight. Feel free to change the location each week.
    • Warning:
    • Do not place the birth control patch on any areas of your body other than the four approved sites. Placing the patch on other areas can decrease its effectiveness.
    • Always discuss your birth control options--and any questions or concerns you have--with your doctor or gynecologist.
