You want to make sure you have a nice healthy soil and try to mimic your soil outside. You can't look at indoor potting soil as dead soil, because biological things are going on there. You don't want to buy a garden soil that's very dense so that gets compacted. You want a potting soil that has organic fluffy materials like coconut core to allow root systems to grow.


Also every year or so you should lay the pot on its side, take the plant out, brush off the old soil, and maybe trim up the root system a little bit if it has twirled around, then put it back. That's the proper maintenance for house plants. Being root-bound is one of the most important things with indoor gardening.




You also want to choose plants that typically won't require that much light unless you have sliding glass patio doors or something. Nice thick windows are a choice spot to put your plants so you can get natural sunlight.
