No matter how well it is built, a pond can't really obey nature. Water continuously flows through a truly natural pond, and ponds in nature are usually overcrowded with backyard pond fish and wild life. A backyard pond is a completely contained system with constantly recirculating water supplies. Without a good pond filter, fish can't survive. The waste of decomposing plants and lots of other things ends up in pond water. It settles at the bottom or tugs in the cracks among the rocks. It is the filter's job to remove the scum and neutralize the other kinds of toxins that build up like ammonia from fish waste. It makes the water healthier, and it keeps maintenance to a minimum.
