Planning a theme party can create a fun and festive atmosphere, as well as simplify some of the planning requirements. Having a theme can limit the number of choices you have to make, thus creating a simplified plan. Deciding on the theme, however, is the first decision you'll need to make. With all the possible themes you can select from, consider what is appropriate for the time of year and for the venue, and choose a theme that would be comfortable and fun for your party guests.
According to Kyle Hayden, the Event Coordinator for Strong Events, which specializes in decorating and design for events and parties, one fun theme is Mardi Gras. He says that everyone knows that Mardi Gras is one big party; so using a Mardi Gras theme can create a fun and festive atmosphere. "It is not something that is so extreme that people fret over what to wear or think they have to go and buy a $500 dress. They can wear something that they already have, or they might be able to go and buy some Mardi Gras beads and wear them at the party," he says. He recommends a party theme like Mardi Gras because it is familiar to most people and it lends itself to a fun type of atmosphere where everyone is going to have a good time.
Hayden says that another popular theme he uses for planning parties is a fiesta theme. Like the Mardi Gras theme, a fiesta theme is familiar to many people and does not require special attire. Bright colors, festive Latin music, and Mexican food provide a good basis for the fiesta theme. Partygoers can dress in festive attire and prepare to have an enjoyable time at your fiesta.
Hayden also suggests using a regional type of theme for a party: "People, especially here in Austin, do themes around local music." He says that there are events like the Austin City Limits Festival that can be the central theme for a party. He also says he plans many parties with regional themes, especially for clients who are in from out of town. Wherever you live, there are various traditions and events from which to pull a theme for a party.
Another tried and true party theme that has typically been a favorite among partygoers is a Hawaiian luau. Evite.com, a free social-planning site featuring invitations, social networking, local information, and event listings suggests that instead of providing guests with the usual plastic lei when they walk through the door, it would be a nice surprise to present each guest with a live flower to wear in her hair or on his lapel. Suggested flowers are hibiscus, orchids, or carnations. Serve traditional Hawaiian foods, decorate with fresh flowers and grass skirts, and consider playing music that allows for a fun hula dance.
When planning a theme party, remember to incorporate your theme into the invitations, the food, the decorations, and the background music. This will provide continuity throughout the party process and will help to create a memorable experience for your guests.
