Defenses make audibles all the time. It all depends on what the offensive set is or what they do. As you plan out things that you do and set a defensive game plan you study and you scout the opponent. If they have a tendency or trend or there is a weakness that you see within a formation or whatever, you always see line backers and people in the secondary talking. They are basically making adjustments to what the offense does.


The middle linebacker usually makes the audible calls because he has an advantage point of being able to see everything. He is also close enough to be able to direct the linemen if they have to go somewhere to be able to control the linebackers. And then you also have one of the safeties, normally the free safety. So whereas the quarterback on offense is the only one who takes the snap, a defense would have a couple because of the different levels that they are in within the defense.
