Is it possible to dye carpet and what are some tips when doing so? Dying nylon carpet is possible. Some carpet cleaning businesses will do this for you if your carpet has faded with usage. Choosing the right...
Choosing the right carpet for your home can be a big decision. In most cases, the carpet you choose will affect the entire atmosphere of a room. The wrong style, color, or classification could cause decorating the room to be a bigger problem than it was first thought to be.
It's no doubt that choosing the right style of carpet is very important, but ask anyone who has recently made the purchase of new flooring and they will tell you that the color is just as, if not more, important. The color of the carpet will ultimately affect the furniture, curtains, and even the entertainment system you put in a room.
Choosing the right color of a carpet can turn a dull room with ordinary flooring into a fun and exciting room as bright as the sun. But in many cases, the original color that someone chooses doesn't end up being the carpet that they wanted. In those cases, they have the option of changing the color of the carpet by applying dye.
The Carpet and Rug Institute is the trade association for the carpet industry. Carol Turner has worked with the Carpet and Rug Institute for sixteen years as a technical services manager. He has been responsible for some of the testing programs for carpet, vacuum cleaners, and adhesives.
Turner is an expert in dye for carpet. "You can dye nylon carpet," he says. "Some carpet cleaning businesses will dye carpet. They can re-dye your carpet if it has faded, and they can always make your carpet a little darker."
Being able to dye the original color of your carpet can be beneficial in the continued enhancement of a room. For example, let's say that someone originally wanted to do their kid's room in a light green that would provide a very energetic and enthusiastic environment.
After a few sleepovers, finger painting projects, and a chocolate pudding phase, the consumer might see that having a light green carpet in a child's room in more hassle than it's worth.
In these cases, the consumer may want to dye their carpet. Unfortunately, Turner says that carpets can only be dyed a darker color. "They usually cannot make it any lighter," he says. "It depends on the skill of your technician doing the work, but sometimes these are quite successful."
Now that the consumer has decided to have their carpet dyed, they must be sure as to what color they would want to change the carpet to. It would not be in the consumer's best interest to have the carpet dyed in a hurry only to have the new color worse than the color they first started with.
In these cases, the consumer should be aware as to what it is about their last carpet that is pushing them to change the color. Be sure to stay away from the original carpet color when getting a dye job done.
"You can prolong the life of the carpet for several years, or you can have stain resistance put in your carpet as well," Turner adds. "However, these depend on the situation. Sometimes it is easy to do, and sometimes, it is a little more difficult to do."
