There are many varieties of garden décor, pottery is just one. However, their styles and costs have a wide range. Carlton Young, Assistant Manager of the Greenhouse and Gardens Division of Craven Pottery, says a good idea is to pick a few stores and see what is out there. From there, you can decide what style and price you like the best.
"The concrete planters start at about $13 and they run up to about $106. Terra Cotta clay planters will usually start at about $95 and they go up to about $206, depending on the size you get. The largest one we have is 36 x 28, which is a pretty big size planter. Then we have iron planters that easily start anywhere from $99 and go up to $3000," Young says.
These are just three example of pottery. There are still many more on the market to choose from.
"We have fiberglass planters that roughly run around $149 to about $200 depending on the size and design. Then we have Mexican pottery that usually ranges from $12 up to about $50," Young says.
According to Young, gardeners are buying more Terra Cotta pottery than ever before. Terra Cotta adds a nice touch to any garden, because of its rustic look. It also comes in a variety of colors. However, Terra-Cotta pottery is not cheap. The bigger your pottery, the more you will pay.
"Terra Cotta pots, strawberry jars or decorative hanging baskets have been popular. We sell hanging baskets for decks and trees and outdoor décor. Pottery pieces used like that have been very popular especially with the planters," Young says.
Terra Cotta pottery is used for big and small plants. Young says in the end Terra Cotta just has a nice look to it.
"Concrete urns (once they are sealed) are good for trees and small shrubs and I have seen those planted and on the sides of groves. Those are good for front doors, entrances and in driveways they look pretty nice," Young says.
According to Buffalo Free-Net, an architectural website, Terra Cotta pottery has been used by gardeners for thousands of years. It's no wonder gardeners keep going back to it.
Terra Cotta first became popular for pottery and architectural use in Greece. During the 7th century, B.C., temples, buildings, and pottery dishes were made out of Terra Cotta. This new craftsmanship then proliferated to other countries.
Terra Cotta reached its all-time popularity during the Renaissance. During this period, it could be found all over Italy and Germany.
Whatever type of pottery you choose to use, Young says your best bet is to shop around before you buy. You can look for Terra Cotta pottery on the Internet, as well. This will give you a head start before you hit the local retail stores. This can help you decide what type of theme you are going for in your garden. The more planning you do, the better your garden will look with your new pottery.
