Being pregnant is a joyful event in your life. But with it are responsibilities to yourself as well as your fetus. Certain precautions must be taken to prevent harm to yourself as well as your baby. The following will explain what you should and should not eat during pregnancy.

During pregnancy, you should avoid food that has raw and rarely cooked ingredients. Foods such as soft cheese (feta and Brie) and unpasteurized drinks (milk and juices) should be avoided because of possible contamination. These foods have not been pasteurized, meaning they have not gone through the process to kill the germs present.

Unfortunately, this also means you should cut back on the raw seafood also (like oysters). To be safe make sure all of the food you eat is thoroughly cooked. This also means raw cookie dough. Salmonella can be present in the eggs.



Alcohol is another big no-no during pregnancy. Alcohol has been linked to birth defects. No one knows the amount that causes defects so to play it safe: don't consume any alcohol during pregnancy.

Food safety is important during pregnancy. Therefore, you should be sure to thoroughly wash your fruits and vegetables before preparing. This removes the pesticides and bacteria that may be present on them. You should take no risk with your food safety make sure when you eat out that the people are preparing your food correctly.

Fresh fish could also be dangerous. They may contain a high amount of mercury, which also may cause birth defects. Toxins also can be dangerous, to play it safe eat fish that is low in fat. These toxins are stored in the fat.

Excessive caffeine should also be avoided. You should only drink at the most one cup of coffee a day. Excessive caffeine may cause birth defects as well as miscarriages.
