Our main thing is that people get fire extinguishers and keep them under a sink.

They cook in a different area and when they have a fire, they forget that they stored it under the sink. It's under the sink, at the same level where the stove is and this is bad. The first thing is you want to do is make sure that you place your fire extinguisher near an exit or near the kitchen door. Put it somewhere so you can see the fire extinguisher. A lot of fires that we see in kitchens are grease fires. People are cooking and in the heat of the moment, they take flour instead of baking soda and throw it on the grease fire, which causes an explosion. Once that grease spreads everywhere, the fire just runs and then they try to put water on it, which causes it to run even more. One thing we try to stress to people is that if you are going to cook, make sure you are wearing short sleeves or sleeves that are rolled up. Make sure you have clothes that fit tightly instead of loose. You also want to make sure that you check all things that are in the open. People have a tendency to answer the phone and leave that particular area and go somewhere. They forget that they are cooking and all of a sudden that grease pan catches fire and starts to burn and when you go back, it's a big mess. Pay attention!
