How to Prevent Mesothelioma

By Ann Johnson

  • Overview

Mesothelioma is a rare cancer that affects the thin tissues in the internal organs. The mesothelium, a thin tissue covering many of the internal organs, can suffer different types of mesothelioma. When the tissues around the lungs are affected, it is called pleural malignant mesothelioma and is one of the most common forms. When it attacks the tissues around the heart it is called pericardial mesothelioma. Peritoneal mesothelioma happens when the disease affects the abdomen. Mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis occurs near the testicles.
    • Step 1

Stay away from the radioactive substance thorium dioxide. Used from the 1920's to the 1950's to diagnose medical conditions, it was later linked to increase of mesothelioma.
    • Step 2

Don't play with monkeys. According to the Mayo Clinic, research indicates that exposure to the simian virus 40, once used in polio vaccinations and initially found in monkeys, may increase the chance of mesothelioma.

    • Step 3

Avoid exposure to asbestos fibers. People who have been directly exposed to asbestos at home or work are at greater risk. Also, do not live with a person who works with asbestos. Asbestos fibers can be carried home on the clothing or skin. If you must live with someone who works with asbestos, she should shower and change into clean clothes before coming in contact with you or your home.
    • Step 4

Do not smoke. Smoking, combined with asbestos exposure, increases the risk of mesothelioma.
    • Skill: Moderate
    • Tip: Family medical history may increase the risk, according to the Mayo Clinic.
